It's All About the People

People are at the center of, virtually, everyone's heart. Our dearest treasures in life are the people we love most, not the stuff we love, or even the milestones we reach. This is evident in both our real lives and our vicarious lives.

Real Life: Whenever someone helps another accomplish something great, or small even, they become closer to that person. An undeniable, unretractable bond is formed. It's not so much the accomplishment that is treasured, although there is that as well, but it's the person(s) involved that make it most meaningful. For instance, whenever I think of my first novel, Sara in the Army, getting published, I almost immediately think of a dear friend of mine who first encouraged me to write it, and who was my constant cheerleader and mentor through the entire process. Without her in the scenario, the accomplishment might have been impossible, which makes her all the more dear to me.

Even in the mundane days of  life we can see that people are the reason we do menial things. A clean, folded load of laundry doesn't particularly inspire me, but I still do laundry in order for my child to feel comfortable at school. Individuals meet deadlines at work because they care about providing for their families or pleasing their boss. Parents help a child with homework because they care about the child, not because they care about measuring inchworms.

Vicarious Life: Even the frivolous things we are involved in relate to relationships. Do we watch a movie to see fancy cars? Not usually. We watch movies to see how people relate and react with other people. Sometimes they do dramatic, even violent things. But the main reason we sit through a movie is to see what happens to the people. We read books for the same reason. Even when the characters are utterly fiction, we hope for the best for them. As a human race, we innately care about people.

In my new road to be being a writer, I hope to write things that inspire people to be better to the real people in their life. It's all about the people--with everything.
